You have most likely heard of the phrase “a star is born!” This is usually said when an actor gets to star in a critically acclaimed film. In Hollywood, landing these roles is not as easy one-two-three, but once they get that much coveted opportunity, what they get in return is not just a few awards and recognition but a very successful acting career.
Oftentimes, they find themselves in the crossroads of show business. They can either ride on their success or choose to take a different path. For the actors on this list, they have either gone on to have stellar careers or are still trying to figure out their place in the industry. Needless to say, they have experienced instant fame because of these movies.
Read below to see the five famous actors and their breakthrough roles:
1. Matthew McConaughey, Dazed and Confused
There are many famous names that appeared in the 1993 film Dazed and Confused, like Milla Jovovich and Ben Affleck. Even if Matthew McConaughey‘s role was less significant, it was unforgettable as he was able to perfectly embody that guy you meet in parties. His colorful performance is almost believable, and it was clear to see that he was going places not long after.
Now McConaughey is already a big name, having won an Oscar for his performance in the 2013 film Dallas Buyers Club and is enjoying a lot of other successful roles in Hollywood.
2. Johnny Depp, Nightmare in Elm Street
Johnny Depp is now one of Hollywood’s most bankable leading men. But his career started going on full gear when he played the love interest in this classic Wes Craven film. While Depp’s part in the film wasn’t as memorable as the villain Freddie Kreuger himself, he was able to build his status as a teenage heartthrob through the movie.
Depp hasn’t shied away from the strange, fantasy, or horror movie genre just yet. He has gone to do several films of the same kind, including an adaptation of a Stephen King novel, the successful Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, and other award-winning movies.
3. Daisy Ridley, Star Wars: The Force Awakens
When the reboot for the new Star Wars movies was announced, a lot of people were excited; and sticking to true Star Wars fashion, the people behind the film decided to cast unknown actors for the leading roles. Daisy Ridley was one of those names. She, along with fellow newcomer John Boyega, became household names when the movie came out. It was not too difficult to see why the casting directors decided to cast Ridley as the new character Rey. Because judging from her audition tape, Ridley is not the type to hold back when it comes to acting.
Ridley definitely is an actress to look out for in Hollywood. With her young age and charisma, she has the potential to succeed in the industry. Ridley will reprise her role as Rey for Episde VIII to be released in 2017.
4. Cameron Diaz, The Mask
Acting alongside Jim Carrey is never easy when you happen to be a newcomer in the showbiz industry. But for Cameron Diaz, who had absolutely no acting experience before appearing in her feature film, seemed to hold her own. Diaz appeared opposite Carrey in The Mask. She got the role of Tina Carlyle, the lead actor’s love interest. Looking back at the film, it is hard to imagine that it was Diaz’s first acting stint. Prior to that, she was a fashion model who posed for photo shoots.
Diaz has found herself enjoying a considerable amount of success nowadays as she seems to star from one hit movie to another. After The Mask, Diaz got leading roles in Charlie’s Angels and even got critical acclaim for her role as a mother to a cancer patient in My Sister’s Keeper.
5. Emma Stone, Easy A
Actress Emma Stone was recently named as one of Hollywood’s highest-paid actresses. She is mostly known for her role as Gwen Stacy in the Spider-Man reboot by Mark Webb. But Stone’s breakthrough role was in the teenage comedy movie Easy A.
Unlike most raunchy teen movies, Stone proved that she can be both funny and sexy without losing her class. Easy A happened to be Stone’s first lead role as well, and since then, she has been well received by critics and audiences alike.
Stone now has several movies under her belt, as well as an Academy Award nomination for her role as a recovering addict in Birdman.
